Advice for hospital and inpatient unit visitors

Visitors to inpatient wards in our hospitals and other sites

  • Please do not visit hospital or any NHS inpatient site if you, or anyone in your household, has a continuous cough or high temperature above 37.8 degrees – or other infectious illnesses such as diarrhoea or vomiting
  • Only essential visits should be made to a hospital or inpatient unit, such as if you are the main carer of a patient there. Everyone else should avoid visiting – especially children and those who are frail or have underlying health conditions
  • Visitors should wash their hands regularly and use alcohol rub when entering and leaving ward areas
  • Visitors must follow staff advice at all times.

Advice for visiting patients with suspected or confirmed coronavirus

  • Visitors will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) provided by the hospital
  • Visitors will be restricted to a patient's room and cannot visit other departments, patients or locations within the hospital after visiting.

The hospital was built by the four surviving children of George and Elizabeth Burt as a memorial to their parents in 1894. Swanage Hospital remained a cottage Hospital until 1948 when it became an NHS hospital. The impressive fire place that is still in situ when you enter the hospital has the original ‘bas relief’ medallions of George and Elizabeth Burt.

Originally designed to house 14 in-patients, Swanage Hospital now has 15 in-patient beds, a Minor Injuries Unit, X-ray and ultrasound, day surgery, endoscopy services and physiotherapy. Our out-patients department is supported by consultants from Poole General, Royal Bournemouth and Dorchester County Hospitals.

Swanage Hospital’s end of life care on Stanley Purser has been recognised by the award of Gold Standard Framework accreditation. We have also completed the first stage for the Quality Mark for Elder Friendly Care and our endoscopy service has also attained JAG (joint advisory group) accreditation.

The hospital is very well supported by a very committed Friends of Swanage Hospital and also held in very high regard by the town of Swanage.
